Winner Of The Miss Jamaica World National Costume Design Is By Saffron Safari
Ready for the world!
That is a fitting title for Jamaica’s most popular young fashion designer right now, Saffron Safari Brown. Crowning her year in fine style, Saffron Safari was granted a coveted chance to participate in the prestigious Miss Jamaica World Pageant. And, she certainly made the most of it. She copped the Top Designer’s award in the National Costume category for her clever display of both sides of Jamaican national attire.
Saffron sees the opportunity as a blessing that opens new doors in her life to share more of her talents. The timing could not be more perfect. Now, quite literally, the world is preparing to see her creations at the 70th staging of the Miss World Pageant in Puerto Rico this December.
Saffron Safari Brown is a true creative at heart. The 25-year-old bespoke designer was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and has memories of making art as early as 6 years old.
She was known for collecting dolls and making dresses with scraps of cloth or drawing her favorite cartoon characters right off the TV screen. Her intimate relationship with art and craft never left her as she only grew fonder of drawing and design when she really began to explore them academically. Her vision of being an artist developed during her preparations for Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, or CSEC, examinations.
Immediately following high school, Saffron enrolled and was accepted into the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts with an intention of majoring in Graphic Design at the School of Art. By then she was 16 years old, ready and excited to discover her purpose. She spent weekends at Garmex HEART Academy learning Garment Construction which she completed in 2012. At the end of her first year in art school, she realized that it wasn’t the right fit or time for further studies in fashion and decided to explore architecture instead. In 2014, Saffron became a mother at 19 years old. This is when she revisited her sewing machine, making shoes and accessories for her daughter. Soon she was getting orders from the public.
To date, Saffron has explored various aspects of art, craft and fashion entrepreneurship by creating and selling handmade candles, baby’s clothing, t-shirts, swimwear and so much more. She is now walking in her purpose, having made and sold swimwear and clothing to hundreds of amazing persons who believe not only in her but the brand she is building. She has designed for Dancehall artiste ‘Shenseea’ and was featured twice on the local Television Jamaica (TVJ) morning show ‘Smile Jamaica’ and once on ‘CVM at Sunrise’.
Her philosophy is, “Life is more meaningful when you have something to believe in and someone who believes in you”. She believes most in her creativity and that it was God’s gift to help her reach her earthly purpose. With overwhelming support from family, friends and clients this determined Empress of easy elegance is ever encouraged to keep on creating. Look out for more from Saffron Safari as she embraces the world with her special brilliance. Her ability to match people’s natural personalities with their best styles for the occasion is right up there with the best, as her loyal clients so often testify. We are front row participants witnessing her stepping out onto the world pageantry stage. We await the next riveting fashion feast that By Saffron Safari has in store.
